Cosmetic Dentistry Basics

Everyone knows that a beautiful smile can light up a room.  But is it something that you can improve?  If you have misshapen, crooked or yellowed teeth, you may want to look into cosmetic dentistry procedures to make you feel better about your smile.  It may help you to regain the confidence to let them show to the world.  Sometimes, even the most subtle change to enhance your teeth can make a drastic difference in the way you look and feel about yourself.  To find out what options are most suitable for you, talk to your dentist.

Some typical procedures are:

Bonding – This is a great procedure that may be able improve the appearance of teeth that are cracked, stained, chipped, broken, or have spaces between them.  During the process of bonding, tooth-colored materials are bonded, or applied, to the tooth surface.

Veneers – Veneers are a great way to enhance your smile.  These are thin custom-made shells which cover the front of your teeth.  Colored to match your natural teeth, veneers are used to treat spaces between teeth and ones that are chipped or worn, permanently stained, poorly shaped or slightly crooked.

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) – This helps to brighten teeth that are discolored or stained.  The dentist may utilize an in-office whitening system, or you may find a system suitable for home use.  You may be able to whiten your teeth by 2-4 shades within the first couple of uses.

Braces – Everyone knows about braces, but many believe that they are just for kids.  There is much new technology including clear braces, that are great options for adults.  Orthodontics may be needed if teeth are crooked, crowded or do not meet properly.  A specialist is called an orthodontist, and your dentist may refer you to him/her to treatment.
